Whole Grain Sandwich Snackers

Whole grain bread is a September Foods of the Month. Now that school is back in session, snacks afterschool are an important part of childrens’ diets. Make sure they are healthy by incorporating whole grains, lean meats and fresh vegetables. Here are some whole grain sandwich ideas that meet all the requirements mentioned above. The best part about them? They all take 15 minutes or less to make!

Whole Grain Sandwich with Turkey and Cheddar – A classic favorite. Use healthy whole grain bread as your base. Top with fresh deli turkey, low-fat cheddar cheese and tomato. Add your favorite condiments (mustard, low-fat mayonnaise, salt and pepper, etc.). Cut into 4 squares to make them fun sized.

Apple Sandwiches on Whole Grain – These apple sandwiches are an excellent option for children who are busy afterschool. Throw these in your child’s lunchbox, or pack in the car for an on-the-go snack. To get the recipe for these apple sandwiches that we featured previously on our blog, click here.

Hard Boiled Egg, Tomato, Cheddar and Chive on Whole Grain – Hard boil an egg then cut up into slivers. Assemble your sandwich on whole grain bread with the egg slices, tomato, low-fat cheddar cheese, chives and salt and pepper. If you want to eat it warmed, toast it on your stove top (like you would for a grilled cheese) or a panini press. Eat right away. Here is a picture of the final product to make you hungry. Now go eat lunch!
