Chicago goes for the Gold!

The University of Illinois at Chicago-Chicago Partnership for Health Promotion (CPHP) has implemented the OWG program in 38 Chicago public schools. Recently, nine of those schools have achieved recognition through the Healthier US School Challenge! A special THANKS goes to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and their parent company, Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), for their continued support in this effort.

UIC-CPHP implements OWG in schools through monthly classroom presentations, cafeteria, after-school and parent programming and partners with the Chicago Park District after-school program and summer camp initiatives. Next year, the program will partner with the Chicago Public Schools contract food services companies to incorporate the Foods of the Month club and expand food sampling initiatives.

Here’s one fun story from this great program:

A parent of a special needs child (who happened to also be a teacher in CPS) came to an OWG training hosted by a partner agency mainly because she wanted to learn more about who these “OrganWise Guys” were since they were powerful enough to have her son give up his favorite drive-through food, french fries, and order apple slices instead. This teacher is now OrganWise and does WISERCISE with her students daily!
We are so honored to partner with these schools in Chicago to empower kids to be smart and healthy from the inside out!
