Diabetes? More like Bye-abetes!

Hi-ya kids!

Have you heard the news? It’s National Diabetes Month. Why do a pair of kidneys care about diabetes? Because the whole body is affected by it! When the body isn’t producing insulin correctly, then the different cells can’t do their job—which makes our job nearly impossible! So, can you guess what is one way to help prevent Type 2 Diabetes? Well for starters, drink water instead of high calorie, sugary drinks which can cause a person to gain unwanted weight and possibly lead to Type 2 Diabetes! We kidneys prefer at least six to eight glasses a day. Every day!

However, one symptom of Type 2 Diabetes is drinking too much water because you are always thirsty. Too much water?! We know, it’s crazy that kidneys think there is such a thing as too much water! And we’re not saying thirsty as in, “Man, I just played outside for an hour and now I’m super thirsty!” We’re talking, “Man, I can’t even sleep through the night without waking up to get drink water!” That’s the kind of thirst we’re talking about, like you just can never quench your thirst! So kids, the moral of the story is this:  Keep drinking water! It helps keep the body healthy and running right! But if you feel like you can never satisfy that thirst, talk to your parents and doctor to see if it is something more serious, like diabetes.OWG_Blog_Art_11-14-11
