Shout Out to School Nutrition

National School Breakfast Week is drawing to a close and we just want to say a big thank you to all of our friends in School Nutrition who work hard to make sure kids have a healthy breakfast every week!

Start the Day Off Right During National School Breakfast Week

Monday, March 4th – Friday, March 8th is National School Breakfast Week! Be sure to start off the day with something healthy and delicious! Did you know that eating breakfast can make you healthier all around? A study presented at the American Heart Association showed that people who eat breakfast are less likely to be obese, have good blood sugar levels, and are less likely to be hungry later in the day. These findings are music to The OrganWise Guys’ ears!

What the New School Meal Pattern Means For You

Many parents choose to pack a lunch for their children because they are concerned about the choices they will receive in the school cafeteria but the fall of 2012 is bringing good news for school meals.  You may have heard all of the buzz going around the internet about the new meal pattern mandated in all schools starting this fall.  Thanks to federal legislation passed in 2010, school meals are getting a makeover.

Announcing National Nutrition Month

Well hello everyone,

OWG_Blog_Art_3-19-12Today was a big day for me. You may not know this about me, but I can sometimes get a little shy and nervous when speaking in front of others. During class presentations I’m okay, mainly because I already know everybody in the class. But I certainly don’t know everyone in the school, which is why I was so nervous when the principal asked me to make a morning announcement about National Nutrition Month. He said he wanted to keep it short and sweet, like a strawberry. I, of course, said ‘yes.’ How often does the principal ask a student to make an announcement?! So I walked from class to the front office, and I was extremely nervous! One of the faculty members even asked me a question, but when I opened my mouth no words came out! I started to get really worried: What if they handed me the microphone and I couldn’t speak? Or what if I could and I said something silly? I just kept thinking of all these possible ways I could mess up, that I didn’t even realize it was my turn to speak. They handed me the microphone, and I didn’t even have time to think, I just started talking! “It’s National Nutrition Month! So don’t forget to eat those high-fiber, low-fat foods this month, and every month!” And then I was done. I handed the microphone over and went back to class. When I opened the door, my teacher and classmates were all applauding and congratulating me! It was such a great feeling! I got to remind people of National Nutrition Month and overcome my nervousness about speaking in front of the school at once! Who knows, maybe next week you’ll find me singing on stage with Madame Muscle! Well, maybe not 🙂

Talk to you soon and don’t forget to get my coloring sheet!
