Gardening: Tips and Resources for National Garden Month

National Garden Month

Happy National Garden Month! We certainly are enjoying the Spring weather and in honor of it being National Garden Month, we wanted to share some gardening tips and resources for you. Gardening is a great way to bring together family as there are so many ways to get the kids involved. It’s a perfect opportunity to have the conversation with your kids about healthy eating.

First, here are three simple gardening tips:

Tip 1: Reap the benefits.

Gardening provides fresh air, exercise and results in healthy fruits and vegetables to eat!

Tip 2: Build a container garden.

You can successfully grow a variety of vegetables and herbs in a small space using a pot with holes on the bottom.

Tip 3: Start with herbs.

Place a pot in a sunny spot and plant herbs like rosemary and basil to add a fresh taste to your meals.

Four Kid-Friendly Picks to Grow in Your Garden

Gardening - lovely girl planting sunflowerIt’s not only Spring, it’s time to celebrate National Garden Month! Gardening with kids is fun and it also can nurture habits of exercise and healthy eating with lessons about soil (food for plants), and water. Using recycled containers and pots, both indoors or outdoors, are good ways to get started. You don’t need the greenest thumb to start. Growing plants are almost fool-proof if you have seeds or plants, healthy soil or compost, sunshine, and water. Follow the directions on seed packages or get help from the store where you purchase your plants. When gardening with kids, it is best to choose plants that are easy to grow, have a short growing season, and are fun to eat and harvest.

Gardening Lessons Learned

Well, it’s time to admit it, I wasn’t practicing what I preached. Having my kids eat vegetables, sure! Trading out screen time for family physical activity, absolutely! Starting a home garden, no way!!!

I have a black thumb and I’m not joking about this. I’m horrible when it comes to plants. Did you know they need water?!? Apparently, I need a living thing to scream/bark/cluck (chickens) at me to remind me of their needs. Obviously, plants don’t do this, so in my house, they die.
