In this day and age of high-impact workouts and regimented exercise programs, simple things like taking a walk can easily get overlooked. As winter fades and our days get longer, talking a walk as a family is a great way to get some extended time together at the end of the day. So, enjoy a healthy family dinner, have the kids help with the clean up and get outside! Here are a few ways you can make that time fun and interactive:
Gratefulness – Discuss the events of the day and have each family member share what they are most grateful for that day.
Make it a Scavenger Hunt – Have your kids find different “treasures” such as leaves, rocks, alumnium cans (might as well keep the streets clean and do a little recyling!).
Play a Game – Play a game such as “I Spy” where you describe things you see on the walk route. The person who guesses it correctly gets to come up with the next clue.
Take Your Camera – Document the walk with surroundings and fun family shots and make into a small keepsake book.
Get To Know Your Neighbors – Living in a community and connecting with others is part of a healthy lifestyle. Take a few minutes to get to know someone in your neighborhood along the way.
Incorporate Dessert – If you happen to have a nearby frozen yogurt shop, grab some low-fat frozen yogurt topped with fruit for a healty dessert!
With all of your commitments as a family, it might not be feasible to take a walk every night but consider trying it at least once a week for just 20 minutes!
