April Healthy Shopping on a Budget

In our monthly Foods of the Month posts, we feature a healthy recipe each Monday that is easy to make and something the whole family will enjoy. These meals are also healthy since they feature at least one of our Foods of the Month. At the beginning of each month, an OWG staff member (aka superstar chef!) purchases the foods and cooks the meals you see in the pictures. The typical cost of groceries for the meals you see is somewhere between $30 and $50 for four or five meals.

We wanted to share a behind-the-scenes look at the foods we made in April to show that you don’t need to break the bank to eat healthy! Keep reading below the picture for more information…

As you can see, the total cost of the five food items above was $40.76. From this, we prepared two side dishes, one breakfast, one lunch, and one dinner that would easily serve a family of four and may even provide leftovers. Many of these foods (like the frozen green beans) can be frozen and kept for a later date if you have leftovers.
This month, we learned to be on the lookout for store deals on fresh produce, two for one whole wheat pastas, and buy one get one free meat (we got about 3.5 lbs. of skinless, boneless chicken cutlets for under $7.00!). This way, you will have all the ingredients on hand to make healthy dinners that can be eaten for lunch the next day!
