Five Fun Fitness Trends for Kids

We’re just a few weeks into the new year and for many of us those fitness resolutions are starting to fade. One of the challenges for busy families is the juggling of schedules, especially when everyone has a different fitness routine. The good news is, there are a lot more ways that parents and their kids can connect over fitness this year. Here are five of our favorites for 2013.

CrossFit Kids The CrossFit (CF) craze has swept the nation! CF focuses on developing strength, speed, and agility. CF has a fast growing kid’s program for any child under the age of 18 (they even have preschool programs). Jack (age 13) says, “CF is as advertised; addictive and fun. I can’t get it out of my system. I’m the luckiest kid in the ‘hood’ to have found this at such a young age.”

Yoga for Kids – Many yoga studios are starting to offer classes that allow parents and children to attend together as well as classes that are just for kids. Yoga is a great way for kids to develop balance, flexibility, and focus. Check with your local yoga studios to see if they offer kid-friendly classes or look online for DVDs that you can do at home.

Zumbatomic  If your child loves to dance he/she will love Zumba. These high energy classes featured choreographed routines for children as young as four.

Kid’s Triathlon –  As the fastest growing sport in the US for adults, triathlon is becoming increasing popular for children as well. If you’re trying to motivate your child to work on their swimming skills over the winter, a kid’s triathlon is a perfect goal. Search online for triathlons in your area!

Adventure Racing – Popular races like the Merrell Down and Dirty and The Muddy Buddy  allow adults and kids to race on the same day. You’ll race a course that includes a series of obstacles including a giant mud pit. It’s every child’s dream and a great way to get active!

Even if you aren’t able to do a class or event together, it can be a fun bonding experience for your family when you share similar experiences. If you or your kids have participated in any of these activities, let us know what you thought!OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
