Memorial Day Weekend is upon us! It’s the traditional beginning of summer and there’s no better way to kick off a healthy summer than by planning a healthy Memorial Day weekend. This is a great time for family and fun but also to honor the men and women who have lost their lives fighting for our freedom!
Here are a few ideas to get in some healthy family bonding:
- Take it outdoors – Visit a local bike trail, find a place to hike, spend the day at the beach or visit the pool on opening day. Whatever it is, make sure it includes something active that the whole family can enjoy.
- Plan a healthy picnic or cookout – Cooking hamburgers? Consider trying low-fat turkey burgers, veggie burgers or lean ground beef. Add fruit salad and chopped veggies as sides. Instead of chips, grab some whole grain pitas and hummus. A cookout doesn’t HAVE to be unhealthy!
- Drink lots of water – As a family, help keep each other accountable to drinking lots of water throughout the day. Let the kids pick out some fun water bottles to encourage increased consumption!
- Unplug for the whole weekend – Turn off the computer and/or television for the whole weekend! Yep, this one is a challenge but it can signify a commitment to spend time together and be active as you kick off the summer. It’s only 3 days but it could just set the tone for your entire summer.
