Tips for Planning a Healthy Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us! It’s the traditional beginning of summer and there’s no better way to kick off a healthy summer than planning a healthy Memorial Day weekend. Here are a few ideas.

  • Plan some type of outdoor activity for your family. Visit a local bike trail, find a place to hike, spend the day at the beach or visit the pool on opening day. Whatever it is, make sure it includes something active that the whole family can enjoy.
  • Plan a healthy picnic or cookout. Cooking hamburgers? Consider trying low-fat turkey burgers, veggie burgers or lean ground beef. Add fruit salad and chopped veggies as sides. Instead of chips, grab some whole grain pitas and hummus.
  • Drink lots of water! As a family, help keep each other accountable to drinking lots of water throughout the day.
  • Turn off the computer or the television for the whole weekend! Yep, this one is a challenge but it can signify a commitment to spend time together and be active as you kick off the summer. It’s only 3 days but it could just set the tone for your entire summer.
