Tropical Fruit Basics

What exactly is the definition of a tropical fruit? The one thing that all tropical fruits have in common is that they cannot withstand frost, or very cold temperatures. For this reason, these fruits can only grow in warm, tropical climates. In the United States, tropical fruits are commonly grown in South Florida, California, and Hawaii because of the warm weather. If you live in one of these states, you may have papayas or mangos ripening and falling off trees in your own backyard in the summer time!

These yummy fruits can be purchased all year, but they are at their peak freshness in the summer. Consuming these fruits may provide protection from heart disease, cancer and strokes. Tropical fruits are high in fiber, vitamins A and C, folate, potassium, calcium and iron. If fresh tropical fruits are not available in your grocery store, consider frozen or canned versions. These variations of fruits still contain healthy nutrients and fiber. If you buy canned tropical fruits, try to buy those in their natural juices, rather than in syrup that has too much sugar.7455188852_7ba7dc7c7e
