Staying Safe in the Sun!

Hello fellow OrganWise Guys Club Members,

I hope that you have been enjoying the start of summer vacation (if it has started for you, of course)! We OrganWise Guys are having a blast spending a lot of timeoutside playing kickball, tag, and other games. While we spend all this time outside, we need to remember to apply plenty of sunscreen to make sure our skin stays healthy. So you need to make sure you ‘sunscreen up’ as well! Every few hours, be sure to put some more on, as it is better to be safe than sorry. I always apply sunscreen before I head outside in the morning, then re-apply after I eat lunch, which is usually a few hours later. Having sunburn can really hurt, so be sure that you protect your skin so you don’t have to miss a day of fun with your friends! And don’t forget today’s coloring sheet!Print

Memorial Day BBQ

Hello fellow OrganWise Guys club members!

As you all know, today is Memorial Day. Memorial Day is when we all take a moment to remember those who have given their lives while fighting for our freedom. My family is going to a local cemetery to place flowers on graves of fallen soldiers. It is a small gesture, but it can remind their friends and family that their sacrifice is still being acknowledged. So today, whether you are going to a cemetery to honor soldiers who have passed away, or going to a BBQ with your friends and family, make sure to take a moment to remember those who have given their lives for the United States of America.OWG_Blog_Art_5-28-12

Leading Ants on a Log

Hello fellow OrganWise Guys Club Members,

This weekend I was at the park with my family. We were playing on the jungle gym, enjoying the outdoors, and having fun spending time with one another. After a lot of playing, I decided to take a break and have one of the healthy snacks we packed. I was sitting there eating my ants on a log (celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins), and I found myself daydreaming. Suddenly, I was on a log with the ants. The ants needed to use this log as a bridge to get across a river, and they needed my help! I fearlessly led them across the bridge, walking very carefully down the center of the log, so as not to fall off. The wind was quite strong though, so I told the other ants to stay low to the ground to avoid being thrown off balance. Almost all of us had made it across, but then I looked back to find that one of the ants had got stuck in quicksand. I couldn’t leave a man behind! So I army-crawled back and got him out of that sticky situation. We made it to the other side, safe and sound! We all started jumping up and down and cheering! And that’s when I heard my mom calling my name, “Pepto! Pepto!” I opened my eyes to realize that I wasn’t just daydreaming about celebrating; I was actually jumping up and down! I bet I looked silly! I quickly finished my nutritious snack and joined my family on a nice walk around the park’s pond. It was a great end to my weekend!

12 Healthy Holidays

Hello Fellow OrganWise Guys Club Members!

Today, we sang some classic holiday songs in school. It was a lot of fun, especially “The 12 Days of Christmas.” While we sang it, I thought about how fun it would be to change the lyrics for a healthy holiday. I talked to some of the other OrganWise Guys, and this is what we came up with so far:

On the first healthy holiday, my best friend gave to me, a pear from the pear tree!
On the second healthy holiday, my best friend gave to me, two bottled waters
On the third healthy holiday, my best friend gave to me, three fresh apples
On the fourth healthy holiday, my best friend gave to me, four cauliflowers
On the fifth healthy holiday, my best friend gave to me, five golden-yellow bananas
On the sixth healthy holiday, my best friend gave to me, six Sir Rebrum’s thinking

Check back later this week, and we’ll post the other six healthy holidays!  While you’re waiting, be sure to get my coloring sheet!

Too.Much.Candy.

Hello Fellow OrganWise Guys Club Members,

I hope you all had an awesome Halloween! More importantly, I hope you were able to control yourself when it came to eating all the Halloween snacks, because I hate to say it, but I wasn’t able to. Halloween night, I had a few extra pieces of candy, but hey, it was Halloween! Who doesn’t eat a little extra candy?! Unfortunately, that wasn’t where I stopped. All Tuesday I snacked on candy so when it came time for dinner, I wasn’t hungry, but I had no idea why. Maybe all the candy was starting to cover my brain in a sugar-coated shell! Well, that’s what it felt like anyway! Then yesterday, I was so tired and sluggish. So what did I do? Well, I thought I just needed a little sugar to wake me up. WRONG! All the candy did was make me feel even more tired, and worse, it gave me a stomachache. I felt gross, and couldn’t figure out why. Then my brain finally told me what was going on! Well, not my brain, but my friend who is a brain, Sir Rebrum. He told me that all the candy was making me feel this way. “There is a reason we eat healthy, you know?!” And he was right! We aren’t just going around telling kids to lead healthy lifestyles because it’s cool (it is cool, though), but because it makes you feel GOOD! Eating right, exercising, and drinking water; all of this makes you and your body feel great! So I am once again living an OrganWise Guys life, and couldn’t feel better about it! If you’re not, start right now. You won’t regret it!  OWG_Blog_Art_11-3-11
