Making the Best Out of Every Situation

Windy making the best out of every situationAn important lesson that kids can learn early on in life is that things are not always going to go as they have hoped or planned. There are so many things that come about in which we have no control over, so teaching kids how to be flexible and go with the flow, can be very valuable to them.

One of the things that can attribute to setting one up for disappointment, is having high expectations. While having high expectations can be beneficial in many areas of life, it’s always good to make sure that expectations are realistic. This is just a great discussion to have with kids so that they can learn that making the best out of every situation will ultimately make them happy!

Practice Gratitude in November

practice gratitude in November

We continue our series promoting healthy behaviors to be implemented and tracked for an entire month (and hopefully beyond). In November we are focusing on practicing gratitude. Taking the time each day to stop and think about the things in our lives that we are fortunate enough to have is so important. To help teach kids to get in the habit of being grateful, they can identify one thing each day in November with the help of this free calendar. So make sure to download and print your November Behavior Tracking Sheet and use in your home or other setting to encourage and track behavior change.

Watch as Windy, the lungs and Pepto, the stomach  practice gratitude by appreciating a good friend:

Here’s to practicing gratitude all month long!

Avoid Eating Too Much Halloween Candy

Windy Avoid Eating too much Halloween CandyThe end of the month has quickly arrived and Halloween is just two days away! We have been talking about it all month long, so it’s hard to believe it’s finally here! We know the kids are excited and yes, dressing up, walking around with friends and family, and getting candy is tons of fun! There’s just one little thing we want to mention and that is to make sure the kids avoid eating too much Halloween candy!

The OrganWise Guys encourage kids to select a couple pieces of Halloween candy, eat and enjoy and then hand over to their parents to manage. Parents can then oversee the candy intake! If it helps, make sure the kids are well-fed before going out for the night and try preparing a healthy treat, like these candy apple cookies for post trick or treating to distract from the candy overload!

Make sure and download the coloring and activity sheet and use as a pre-trick or treating time filler:Click-Coloring-Sheet

Eat More Fruits and Veggies on Halloween

Peter Pancreas eat more fruits and veggiesAll month long we have been discussing ways to be healthy and safe on Halloween. Today we are going to focus on the inevitable candy that is headed your way in a few short days. We always like to promote moderation and so a few pieces of candy to celebrate Halloween is okay. However, in saying that, we also like to recommend loading up even more on the healthy fruits and vegetables that are so good for your body. It also wont hurt to add in a little extra physical activity!

As we head into the holiday season, it is important to remember moderation and also to focus on making healthy choices, including encouraging kids to eat more fruits and veggies, most of the time!

For now, go ahead and download the coloring sheet helping kids to eat more fruits and veggies:

Halloween Safety Tip: Use the Buddy System

Hardy Buddy systemWe’ve been discussing Halloween safety this month and we are back with yet another tip: Make sure and use the buddy system on Halloween night. This one is so important really all of the time! It’s always a good habit to go ahead and use the buddy system when out and about, especially at night. You can never be too careful!

It’s essential to teach kids about the necessity of the buddy system from a young age. Going out at night alone is simply never a safe or smart decision. Instilling this in kids minds early on will benefit them now and down the road. Hardy Heart is all about kids being safe on Halloween and every other day of the year, so start the conversation now!
